Bone Broth
To say that 2020 has taught us a lot of things would be an understatement. We have learned to completely adapt our daily routines and even our family traditions. We have probably become more grateful for our loved ones and had to really take a deeper look at what is truly important to us. I know for myself, and probably a lot of others, things that once seemed simple are where I have been able to find the most joy and fulfillment. One of those things is cooking.
Home cooked meals is unfortunately something a lot of people have gotten away from, we are so strapped for time that we think its easier to pick something up rather than make a nutritious home cooked meal. But when we cook a meal at home we have an opportunity to include the ingredient that takeout can’t add, love.
Along with love we can also add all sorts of immune boosting goodies like the one I added to our stew for dinner. Bone broth.
The hardest part of bone broth is the wait time... other than that you don’t need to be an expert chef to achieve this nourishing item.
Ingredients:
- 2-4 lbs beef marrow bones
- 1 large onion
- 2 carrots
- 2 celery stocks
- 1 bulb of garlic
- Dried oregano and bay leaves (optional)
Directions:
- Add bones, vegetables, and herbs to crockpot
- Pour over purified water, enough to cover ingredients
- Put on low and cook for 24-48 hours
- Stirring occasionally
- Strain out vegetables and bones
- Pour broth into a container and transfer to the fridge
- Allow to chill in fridge overnight and the fat will rise to the surface and allow you to easily remove it from broth
- After you’ve removed the fat, transfer whatever you wont be using within the next few days to freezer safe containers and freeze so you can have healthy homemade broth on hand!
A bonus that you get from making your own broth is the fat that you skimmed off the top. You can use this in place of butter or oil in cooking and frying!
You can warm the fat to be able to pour into an ice tray so you can pop out the perfect amount for your next stir fry.
